Recording basics

Record your screen with the computer's audio

Capture what the machine is playing, not just what you say into the microphone.

~15sec to do
macOS, Windows

A recording with no computer audio loses half the story. The other side of a call, the video you were reacting to, the sound an app makes when it fails, none of it survives, and you end up describing noises the viewer cannot hear. Computer audio is off unless you ask for it, because most recordings do not need it and nobody wants their music in a bug report.

How to do it

  1. 1

Find the speaker icon in the recording controls

It sits alongside the microphone and camera. Hovering it tells you whether computer audio is currently on or off.

  2. 2

Switch it on before you start

The choice sticks, so every recording after this one captures computer audio until you switch it back off.

  3. 3

Turn the microphone on as well if you want to talk over it

Both inputs can run at once, and both end up in the recording.

  4. 4

Wear headphones when you are using both

Otherwise your microphone hears the computer audio a second time and the playback echoes. QuickSnip puts a reminder on screen as soon as it sees both switched on.

What you end up with

A recording that carries the machine's own audio, so a call, a video, or an error sound plays back for whoever you send the link to. Nothing to install first, because macOS and Windows both hand the audio over to QuickSnip directly.

Questions

Do I need a virtual audio driver?

No. QuickSnip captures computer audio directly on both macOS and Windows, which is the part that usually means installing something extra.

Why does my recording echo?

Your speakers are playing the computer audio and your microphone is picking it up again on the way past. Headphones fix it, and QuickSnip warns you as soon as both inputs are on.

Can I capture computer audio without recording my voice?

Yes. Leave the microphone off and the recording carries only what the machine played.
